DESCRIPTION:NAPE will be hosting a series of webinars about the value of public services in Canada with experts\, organizers\, union organizers\, and community coalitions. \nThe first webinar in our series will feature Chris Gallaway from Friends of Medicare\, and Dr. Braden Manns from the University of Calgary. \nRegister Here \nChris Gallaway (he/him) is an experienced community organizer and advocate for public health care. Born and raised on a farm in rural Saskatchewan\, he has since spent most of his adult life living on Treaty 6 territory\, first in Saskatoon\, and now for over a decade living in Edmonton. His past experience includes working for the Alberta Federation of Labour\, in three provincial legislative assemblies\, and for a variety of non-profit and community organizations. Outside of work Chris is an active volunteer and community member\, as well as an avid reader. \nDr. Braden Manns is the Associate Vice President (Health Research)\, University of Calgary\, a Professor in Health Economics and a Kidney Specialist at the University of Calgary. He has expertise in Applied Health Economics\, and his current research interests include assessing the impact of health system structure\, and health care policies on the health of Canadians. He has served as Associate Chief Medical Officer and lead for Alberta’s Strategic Clinical networks\, and Interim Vice President for two different Alberta Health Services portfolios. He is active on X\, Instagram\, and Tiktok at bradenmannsyyc.

DESCRIPTION:The labour movement was built on a simple promise: an injury to one is an injury to all. But racism in our workplaces\, and sometimes in our own union spaces\, means that promise doesn’t land the same way for every member. Racialized workers are often overrepresented in precarious work\, underrepresented in leadership\, and too often left to speak up about racism on their own. \nIn this lunch and learn\, Laurabel Mba\, Founder and Lead Consultant of Laurabel Mba Consulting\, unpacks why anti-racism isn’t a side issue for unions. It’s core to the work of fairness\, safety\, and collective strength. We’ll look at how racism shows up in everyday member experiences\, grievances\, bargaining\, and who gets to lead\, and talk about what it actually looks like to be anti-racist in union spaces\, from the local meeting to the bargaining table. \nYou’ll walk away with practical ways to recognize racism when it shows up\, respond when members raise concerns\, make union spaces more welcoming and representative\, and turn solidarity from a slogan into a practice. \nRegister Here
