“The reopening of the school year seemed like an opportune time to present this cheque,” said Furlong. “It will help get the programs up and running and ensure that children have a nutritious meal to start their day.”
Approximately twenty years ago, with a donation of $100,000 raised by its members, NAPE provided the seed money to help start school-based nutrition programs. NAPE members have been contributing to it ever since. “NAPE is known as a supportive ally for our community and we are very proud to help provide children with the nutritional building blocks they need to be successful in school. The Kids Eat Smart program is a valuable part of our provincial school program and we are pleased to assist the children of our province,” Furlong said.
Kids Eat Smart executive director Daphne LeDrew said, “Kids Eat Smart Foundation is proud to have the ongoing support of NAPE members. The contribution will translate into more than 5000 breakfasts for school children throughout the province, and the funds will reach the clubs through the Kids Eat Smart grant allocation process. The timing is perfect. Throughout September volunteers – some of them NAPE members – at the 210 Kids Eat Smart Clubs are busy getting things in order for the year ahead.”
