NAPE Members at Choices for Youth – The Lilly Vote in 100% Favour of Strike Mandate
ST. JOHN’S, NL – Workers at Choices for Youth – The Lilly, who are members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE), have voted 100 percent in favour of strike action. Workers are now in a legal strike position.
The Lilly is a 14 unit congregate living supportive housing facility for youth operated by Choices for Youth. NAPE represents nine (9) workers at the Lilly.
“NAPE has been in negotiations with Choices for Youth for a first collective agreement for these workers for nearly a year and it has been almost two years since the bargaining unit voted to join the union. Conciliation efforts have not been successful,” said Jerry Earle, President of NAPE. “These NAPE members undertake very admirable work that supports vulnerable youth in our community. Unfortunately, their employer has been unwilling to offer these workers a contract that is fair and acceptable.”
“At every step of the way through the collective bargaining process, Choices for Youth’s actions have been more akin to those of a large, union-busting corporation than a community organization that projects an image of being progressive, inclusive, and equitable,” said Earle. “The position and proposals made by the employer throughout bargaining mirror the kind of anti-union language found in American right-to-work states.”
“I’ve continuously been astounded by the approach, positions and proposals taken by Choices for Youth and their legal counsel throughout this round of bargaining,” said Earle. “This is the last organization you would expect this kind of anti-worker behaviour from.”
Choices for Youth’s stated vision is for, “A world free of social and economic barriers, where young people feel able and encouraged to pursue their aspirations and potential.” NAPE sincerely hopes Choices for Youth reconsiders its position and embodies that same vision internally.
“While we would prefer to reach an agreement without job action, our members at the Lilly are willing to take whatever action is necessary to stand up for what is fair and just, not only for themselves but for the many workers in the not-for-profit sector in similar situations,” concluded Earle.
NAPE is ready to return to the bargaining table should the employer be willing to take the necessary steps to reach an agreement that is acceptable and fair to the NAPE members at the Lilly.
