The terms of the agreement are considered an integral component of all public sector agreements in the region. The Labrador Benefits Agreement was first established in 1990 with the previous agreement having expired in March 2009.

“This is a positive first public sector agreement reached with the newly elected Dunderdale administration,” said Bert Blundon, NAPE Secretary Treasurer and Chief Negotiator on behalf of the five public sector unions involved. “This new agreement will help address some concerns surrounding recruitment, retention, and fair compensation of workers in Labrador due to the higher cost of living and isolation in the region.”

The new Agreement includes increases in Labrador Allowance ranging from 13.74 per cent to 14.14 per cent as well as increases in the Travel Allowance ranging from 14.71 per cent to 22.73 per cent.

The Agreement is applicable to public sector employees in Labrador, including those represented by the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE), Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses’ Union (NLNU), Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA), and Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association (RNCA).

The new Agreement is effective as of April 1, 2009 and is set to expire on March 31, 2013.
