ORGANIZING FIELDWORKER

THE POSITION

 

NAPE is expanding its organizing capacity in an effort to respond to the many workers in the province who are seeking union representation. To  that end, NAPE is seeking to expand its organizing department by hiring organizing fieldworkers to support a new, well-resourced organizing campaign.

The right candidate for this position is someone who is committed to organizing workers in non-unionized workplaces, who can bring appropriate organizational, outreach and planning skills, and inspiration to the position.  As a Union Organizing Fieldworker you will assist workers in gaining union representation at their worksites. You will educate workers about their workplace rights, identify and develop leadership skills among workers, explain the union organizing process, and work with a team to lead a campaign for union recognition. In this position, as a Fieldworker, you will visit workers one on one, at their homes, virtually, or other places outside the workplace. As a Fieldworker, you must be skilled at building relationships with workers and be able to inspire them to get involved with their co-workers to gain a voice at work through organizing a union.

The work of an Organizing Fieldworker is challenging and demanding. Organizers work irregular hours which often includes evening and weekends and may be expected to travel extensively for considerable periods of time within the province.

DUTIES

  • working under the direction of the Lead Organizer, you will co-ordinate and provide a wide range of duties associated with organizing the unorganized
  • work with the organizing team to develop an organizing plan that includes identifying potential sectors and workplaces
  • participate in events, functions, rallies and meetings
  • motivate and mobilize employees to join the union
  • review card signing and legal procedures for each campaign and be involved in card signing for each campaign
  • assist the Lead Organizer with the preparation of an application for certification and prepare related Labour Relations Board applications, in consultation with the Lead Organizer and legal counsel, where required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • demonstrated ability to organize and mobilize
  • excellent communication, interpersonal, listening and motivational skills required
  • self-motivated person with initiative
  • experience and ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with multicultural and diverse communities
  • ability to track and co-ordinate details and data through data management software (Excel)
  • experience and ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people from diverse occupations
  • ability to prepare reports, documents, and correspondence
  • knowledge of the Labour Relations Act and other relevant legislation
  • understanding of the Union Movement and the role of the Labour Relations Board
  • union organizing experience preferred, experience as a union activist or experience in community organizing or advocacy in another sector, required
  • commitment to organizing the unorganized
  • commitment to principles of unionism and social justice
  • proficiency in common computer applications
  • access to a vehicle to use in the performance of their duties and a valid NL Driver’s License would be an asset

ABILITIES

This is a highly demanding job and involves significant contact with prospective NAPE members and various employers. The position requires the Organizing Fieldworker to have the ability to analyze complex problems, manage workload, maintain deadlines and adjust to changing priorities. The incumbent must be able to deal with people in a variety of stressful situations.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

$50,000 annual salary plus generous benefits package

The position is non-bargaining unit 6-month contract with the ability to renew.
