DISPUTE  RESOLUTION SPECIALIST

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant will be responsible for; but not limited to, the timely resolution of cases referred to Arbitration. The Dispute Resolution Specialist works closely with the Labour Relations Specialist in determining the proper medium for handling the advancement of grievances (ie: Mediation, Med-Arb, Expedited Arbitration, and Arbitration). Grievances are advanced to the Team after thorough review by the Labour Relations Specialist. There is a centralized booking system and file management system. The successful applicant will take carriage of the file, reviews, prepares and presents the case in Arbitration and will also be responsible to present/represent; when applicable, before professional bodies, ie: CLPNNL and NLCSW, etc.. Will work closely with Union Leadership, Labour Relations Specialist and General Counsel. The successful applicant will need to have the ability to conduct research on a wide range of labour related issues. This position will interpret a variety of Collective Agreements, Acts, Legislation, etc. Responsible for efficient processing of grievances, developing and implementing Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms. Advises the President or their designate on the schedule, resources and strategies related to Arbitrations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

An applicant will have a Bachelor/Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline such as Labour Relations, Labour Law, Political Science, or education equivalency with a minimum of four (4) years of experience in the field of labour relations with progressive responsibility in the application of labour law in the interpreting of collective agreements. Advanced level of understanding of Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms; in particular, preparing and presenting Arbitrations. Ability to research case law, interview witnesses from various backgrounds and impart to other the meaning and effect of the language and construction of statues, regulations, and collective agreements and to argue cases.

Applicants must have the ability to plan, organize and coordinate the preparation of various cases in a dynamic and changing work environment that require critical analytical and logical thinking to provide solutions to problems. Ability to innovate and take the initiative in the process of grievance resolution. Ability to work independently with a minimum level of supervision. Ability to understand, influence and serve the membership of the union. Demonstrated commitment to social justice and the fight for workers’ rights.  Knowledge of, experience with, and commitment to, the union movement combined with a familiarity of the issues and challenges unions face in the current political environment is a key asset. Shall be periodically required to travel throughout the province for the purpose of investigating files, preparing and presenting Arbitrations.
