Every day specialized lab professionals perform complicated medical tests which play a vital role in the diagnosis and prevention of disease. The critical testing they perform is essential to doctors determining the right course of treatment for patients. According to NAPE President Carol Furlong, “because most of their work is carried out behind the scenes, these dedicated health care workers often go unnoticed by the general public or even those within our health care system.”

Lab professionals study blood cells, test body fluids and tissue, prepare samples, and interpret test results. They identify bacteria and viruses that cause disease, help discover new medical treatments, participate in ground breaking medical research, help solve medical mysteries like SARS and West Nile virus. Laboratory testing is a job in which technology and medical science keep changing, requiring lab professionals to continue learning to keep abreast of these changes. “Even though it is rarely said, without the work carried out by lab professionals, in many cases, doctors would only be guessing, said Furlong.

Furlong stated, “This week is an opportunity to recognize the contribution and dedication of medical lab professionals to our health care system and to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. We ask that you take this week to join us in acknowledging the achievements and role of lab professionals.
