Hi folks!

It’s that time again…1 Billion Rising 4 Justice! Last year, the floors of the Knights of Columbus hall shook with joy. Over 1000 people attended our incredible event – as over 40 community groups came together to address the issue of violence against women and to celebrate the work so many of us do to end gender based violence. Let’s do it again!

This year’s theme is Rising 4 Justice! So we’ll do things a little differently. Thursday, Feb 13th we will have our wonderful community event (again) at the Knights of Columbus from 2:30 to 8pm, with booths, food, and dancing…. There will be live entertainment, The Salty Dolls and the Moonshine Men, drumming, and more….. Admission is free and open to absolutely everyone!

Groups working to end violence – from all over our city are invited. We can offer you a free table (info kiosk) and you can use the occasion to raise $ for your organizations – sell t-shirts, etc! The aim is to share information and enthusiasm for your programs and projects. We’ve also invited 3 local schools!

We will join the 1 Billion Rising international movement with our own local action (4 JUSTICE) by holding a flash mob demonstration on Friday Feb 14th, Valentine’s Day (at noon in front of Atlantic Place) and demand our Family Violence Intervention Court back! This is what ‘Rise 4 JUSTICE’ in St. John’s will look like! A free schoolbus will be available at 11:30 at the stadium Dominion parking lot at Quidi Vidi Lake to drive people to Water St. and back. Everyone is welcome on the bus!

Art supplies to make posters and art and costumes for the flash mob/event on Friday will be provided at Thursday’s event.

We have a fantastic organizing, sponsorship committee to pull this all together. If you would like to help out that would be grand. We have to work really quickly! See the names and logos of this amazing team on the attached poster!

Please reserve your table ASAP (by Feb 6th) or, if you have any questions about either of the 2 events you can email Jenne Nolan at my office : jennenolan@gov.nl.ca. or call 697-9738.

So looking forward to seeing you, to celebrate, agitate and demonstrate together….

Gerry
